M Form 1st year filing
Why is it important to file the M Form.?
After your registration at the Municipality, you are registered in the municipality files’ but not in the files of the Income Tax authorities.
You need to file your 1st year filing (M form) in order for the tax authorities to get to know you, register you in their tax files, and also need to file your whereabouts, your previous wealth, marital status, kids etc etc…..and you are entitled ( in most cases) for a refund..
Once you filed the M form for the fiscal year of your arrival, you can file subsequent annual Income tax returns on the Belastingdienst portal.

Contact I Tax if you would like to discuss:
- a draft M form, showing and explaining calculations of your refund amount to receive from the Belastingdienst.
- the do’s, don’ts and why’s of the M Form
Why is it important to not wait too long to file the M form!
- If you wait too long, maybe a year or two, you do need to file a back-dated M Form as from the fiscal year of your arrival.
- If you want to gain fiscal deductibles in the future, you need to file this M Form first.

The M Form and extra interesting deductibles:
The good news about the M-form is that most returns lead to a refund. This is the result of the difference in the period from when you arrive and from the beginning of the tax year.
The tax tables that determine the income tax are based on a yearly basis. If you arrived in the Netherlands during the year, then the average rate of the taxation is calculated as if you were in the Netherlands for the entire year and not only a portion.
In the M-form return this is corrected and will lead to a tax refund.
The Dutch Belastingdienst have a saying: We cannot make it nicer, but we can make it easier
